A Harvest of Presence

A Harvest of Presence

"It's an oasis!" - "I feel like I'm back in Costa Rica." - "It reminds me of Hawaii." - "Hydrangeas don't bloom in Florida!" - "Your garden always makes me feel good." said friends, strangers, or neighbors walking past our garden. It began simply enough as a six foot plot of earth with a Pygmy Palm in the middle of it. Then a family of Sandhill Cranes looking for grubs expanded it to eight feet. Their search for food compelled us to do something with the mound of now bare soil they'd overturned.

The teachings on Nature by Sufi mystic Inayat Khan came to mind. He said, "There is only one holy book. It is the sacred manuscript of Nature and it is the only scripture that can enlighten the reader." He went on, "All scriptures, before Nature's manuscript, are just little pools of water before the ocean." His teachings on Nature blended easily with our own practices on Mindfulness. In that perfect alignment of being present in the moment "The Garden" came into being.

It didn't come with instructions on what to plant. So we just sat with it intuitively. Using mindfulness techniques we were present to every nuance it revealed. We felt the warm humid atmosphere in and around the area. It was a vibrant place filled with insects and birds. Digging into the soil we saw tan-colored dry sand and black moist clay battle for dominance. Mindful tilling uncovered earthworms everywhere that were helping to aerate the soil with long trenches. Sadly, they also fed the white Ibises that arrived in flocks every morning at dawn. A few earthworms usually escaped the long curved bills which probed deep inside their trenches. It was nature teaching about life.

Days settled into weeks and then months as we prepared the planting bed. We planted by season, consciously watching the direction of the sun's angle to the garden. We saw how its progression across the sky brilliantly lit the garden or where it left shadows from the palm. The sun guided which plants would work best. But it was the flowers that told us what to do. We were present to each one of them in their growing season, selecting glorious shrubs and annuals in a riot of colors.

We spent our days digging, spading, fertilizing, watering, and pruning. We talked to the plants if they were stressed, assuring them all was well. We praised the ones that produced the most brilliant blossoms, telling them how remarkable they were. When experts assured us we couldn't grow roses in the heat of Florida we shrugged pointing to the pink, yellow, or red long stemmed beauties. "Tell them!" we said.

Every morning we made a daily pilgrimage into the garden. We admired each plant, propping up some dirt around the base of one, removing a twig that had fallen on a flower, or cutting off a dead branch. We touched their leaves in silent homage. We hovered over a new seedling like expectant mothers. We showered gratitude and appreciation for each one of their unique expressions. In time we came to realize working the garden had become it's own form of meditation - a most natural and easy form of direct communication with nature.

Inayat Khan said every leaf is a page that contains divine revelation. In the ten seasons as caretakers of the garden it's taught us how to read the manuscript of Nature. The manuscript showed there was a cycle of birth, growth, and death in every entity. While plants do grow tall and burst with flowers, soon those flowers die, their seeds feeding the birds. But always, life continues. Some seeds that fall to the ground become seedlings. In time, those seedlings become mature plants with new flowers, repeating the cycle of birth, growth and death. The plants were no different than the Sandhill Cranes who returned every spring, laid eggs, hatched their babies and taught them how to feed on grubs and earthworms, often in our garden.

Nature is a fully balanced organism. It doesn't really need humans. But humans need it. It transports us to a place outside ourselves. It gives us the space to slow down and to appreciate the magnificent colors and scents that can alter our moods. It teaches us about birth, life and death. It allows us the freedom to become at peace with this knowledge. And it bestows its bounty on those who take the time to let it. The Garden is a Harvest of Presence moments. All one must do is practice presence and patience and listen.

THE 13 CLANMOTHERS - THE CLARITY OF GREY

The Clarity of Grey

When 2015 arrived it seemed world events would ease a bit. But the geopolitical  predictions for the year pointed to more turmoil with extremists and terrorists of various persuasions running roughshod over others. How can this be? All over the world there are groups praying for peace, for a change in human hearts, or for a better way of life. Yet, their sparks of light get lost in all the dark and dreary events in the news. What can we do?

Reflecting on it one morning in meditation I heard a voice say, Summon the Clanmothers.  It seemed like the answer! Especially because this month is the Equinox - the seasonal point when the earth is covered with equal hours of sunlight and darkness. It's a cosmic point of balance for the earth, where extremes are harmonized. At the midpoint everything that is black or white becomes a neutral gray. In that moment The Clarity of Gray appears. It simply blends and neutralizes both extremes of black and white.

So, if the ancients considered the Equinoxes holy and sacred why not us? The word went out and the Clanmothers were summoned. One was a peacemaker. Three led  spiritual centers. One worked with the oceans and her inhabitants. A few taught "earth ways" in their practices while others led meditations. All of them responded to the call, knowing that on this day, in this season of balance, the sound of their prayers would fill the ether, and the discerning would hear it. They knew in this brief moment of balance, the extremes of black and white would neutralize for a few days, and they would influence the outcome.

The 13 Clanmothers represent aspects of the Divine Feminine - aspects ignored for 3000 years. The Divine Feminine kept the wisdom ways, told the stories, acted as a healer, counseled the afflicted, weaved and spun, prevented war and honored the visions. Each of the 13 Clanmothers was a matriarchal elder in ancient tribes. Each matriarch held the truths of the aspects. They performed the rituals and ceremonies, presiding over births and funerals. They were keepers of the names, dispensing them at birth and returning the name at death.

The Clanmother was not just the wisdom keeper but also the dispenser of justice. She would remove a Chief who did not follow the guidance of matriarch. She negotiated and harmonized all tribal disputes. Wars could not begin unless the Clanmother approved. She rose above the petty arguments and extreme positions, using her skills as peacemaker and mother to keep everything in balance. She was the epitome of The Clarity of Grey.

Each Clanmother is aligned with one of the 13 moons of the lunar. It's more natural because it acknowledges the feminine and lunar cycles. It logically assigns thirteen months of 28 days to the lunar calendar. This totals 364 days of the solar year. The extra day was one of celebration, honoring the year past and welcoming in a new year.

On the Equinox, the Clanmother acts as harmonizer for the earth and peacemaker for the people of extreme positions. She will take all extremes of black and white and blend them into the clarity of grey. She will insist that weapons of war and the voices of hate be sheathed as she summons peace upon the land. She sees far and weaves a web that raises humankind. For her duty is to hold a vision of hope, ease, and grace. But most of all she sees to the children who will live the vision of the 13th moon.

13 Clanmothers

The 13 Clanmothers

In many ancient cultures the role of mother and medicine woman is honored, butmore specifically, in the northern Native American tribes, the Mothers of the Clans were held in sacred reverence.  These Clanmothers were the historians, the faith-keepers, spiritual advisors, and the ones who chose tribal leaders.  They served in rituals, ceremonies, medicine and spiritual events.  As life-givers, their role was keeper of the culture and history of the tribe.

The Clan Mother was a leadership hereditary role, passed down from grandmother to mother to daughter.  In a sacred ritual, the baton was passed, impressing each woman with the importance of just rule, honoring the spirit, animal and earth kingdoms, keeping the stories of the lineage alive, and insuring the tribal leaders were functioning in alignment with the great laws of spirit and earth.  Because they were responsible for selecting the chief of the tribe so too would they remove the chief if he was not serving for the good of all.

Solar-Lunar Cycles

The Clanmothers like the Druids, Incas, Maya and other cultures dating back 5,500 years, honored the sacred rhythms and cycles of earth.  It was a natural process for them to follow the moon's rotation every 28 days because 28 days was also the female biological cycle.  This explanation led to a more harmonious indigenous calendar of 13 moons in a solar year.  In time, a specific Clanmother with a distinct role and message was assigned to each moon.

Clanmothers

Each Clanmother has a purpose and a moon month.  The Clanmothers beginning with January are:  She who Talks With Relations, Wisdom Keeper, She Who Weighs The Truth, Looks Far Woman, Listening Woman, Storyteller, She Who Loves All Things, She Who Heals, Setting Sun Woman, She Who Weaves the Web, Walks Tall Woman, She Who Gives Praise, and the 13th and last one, She who Becomes Her Vision.

Each Clanmother has a specific color associated with her role and her mission.  That color holds a vibration that represents the month of that moon.  The Clanmother also brings a teaching message to men and women who wish to heal themselves and to prepare their own personal cycle for the coming new earth.

Equinox March 20, 2012

In 2012, every one of the seasonal cycles becomes more refined, especially by the intentions we are setting forth for the year.  We are part of the great awakening of human consciousness.  On the Spring Equinox of March 20th, the rebirth begins in earnest.

Join in this sacred ceremony at South Lido Beach State Park at 7 pm.  Hear and take into your hearts the message from each of the Clanmothers.  It is the season of renewal, one that calls to us and to all we aspire to be.

10.10.10 - A Catalytic Date

Triple-digit calendar dates are Gregorian calendar numerological points in time that began on the first month of 2001 and will end on the 12th month of 2012.  The rare dates, 1/1/1 through 12/12/12, correspond to the twelve months of the year and the twelve astrological signs.  As we approach 2012, the dates have become energetic focal points for people to come together.
While most people outside the metaphysical communities have no awareness of the meaning of the dates, the three digits are energetic trigger-points that cause us to focus on the date as a time of personal and planetary healing.  United in thought and intention with people all over the world, these dates can accelerate catalytic changes in us and serve as point-in-time frequency markers.  When we hold a noble intention on these days, it gives us an opportunity to check on our state of consciousness, and to recalibrate ourselves as we prepare for the end times of the Mayan Long Count calendar.

Since the start of the 21st century, we've seen much more activity as groups come together to hold gatherings in recognition of the triune dates.  Many have traveled to Egypt, Peru, or Mayan lands to participate in sacred rituals or ceremonies organized by the native peoples on 7/7/7, 8/8/8 and 9/9/9.  Others developed or synchronized local events that united their efforts with those in far-away places.  As the decade has proceeded and we've come closer to the Year Zero end-date of the Mayan Long Count calendar, the events have become even more common.
While the Gregorian calendar is not aligned with the Mayan Calendar per se, there's general consensus that something unique is happening at this time on earth and we need to step up our intentions of purpose and good-will.  Global communications via the internet or television show us daily how old systems and ways of thinking are collapsing.  New scientific telescopes trained on the solar system and the galaxies dissolve old beliefs and enlighten us with information about the origin of the universe and our place in it.  If nothing else the new findings stir great debate about our cosmology.

Yet other changes are also underway, though perhaps not as evident.  Instead of waiting for religious or governmental leaders to lead the way, the people themselves are responding to the changes or directing that which they want to see.  They are engaging in local projects of self-reliance while still caring or looking out for their neighbors.  There's a sense that we're all in this together and only by joining with like-minded resolve can we address and endure the changes that are affecting us.

While it was always common to celebrate seasonal changes like the equinoxes and solstices the annual triune dates have become beacons of hope to help awaken humanity.  This month we celebrate a rare triple-digit calendar date that happens once a millennium.  It is the 10th day of the 10th month of the 10th year.On 10.10.10 we are summoned to hold sacred space.  On 10.10.10 we calm ourselves from the chaotic mind.  On 10.10.10 we invoke the guidance of self-mastery.  On 10.10.10, we join in ceremony with others who are also called to hold the time sacred.  On 10.10.10 we rise above our limitations and affirm that we are much more than we have ever been.  On 10.10.10 we open our hearts in loving compassion, for our own self-healing and for that of the planet.
But there's more than this happening on 10.10.10.  The date, unique as it is, serves as a catalyst to remind us that not only this date but any date, can be proclaimed sacred.  Any day that calls us together in harmony creates a vibration of unity.  Any day that opens boundlessness in thought lights up an energetic field.  Any day that allows us to live in the heart, begins our awakening.  Any day that reduces tension and dissolves separation between people is a fine day.  On 10.10.10 we are reminded that humanity can indeed achieve illumination by living in the heart and holding sacred every day.

2009 Vernal Equinox - Crystal of Peace Mandala from The Prism of Light

Equinox Ceremony 2009
Crystal of Peace Mandala
The Prism of Light Opens

A second call was sounded across the city of light to join in ceremony on the Spring Equinox to dedicate the four foot Crystal of Peace Mandala. This mandala originated two months ago as the next stage in the unfolding vision that began on Summer Solstice 2008 when we created an ethereal Prism of Light in southwestern Florida. The Prism of Light opens in this mandala revealing in the center, a faceted flower of life which is known as the blueprint of creation in Sacred Geometry. As crystal beings of light ourselves, the mandala reflects the opening we're each experiencing in our consciousness as we move from denser carbon form to the diamond light of dwellers in the new earth.

In the week preceding the Equinox, the Mandala was imbued with the blessings and hopes for peace at several of the Prism Anchor locations which included the Women's Meditation Group, Radiance of Sarasota, Rising Tide, Anchoring Light, and the Wheel of Conscious Creation. Then on Friday evening, over 100 attendees joined in a sacred ceremony of renewal, rebirth and springtime as we celebrated the Vernal Equinox at Unity's Labyrinth.

Holy Ground

Holy space was set by toning two large Tibetan Gongs during the smudging. Then the heartbeat of the Mother Drum sounded as many walked the labyrinth. Some of the original Anchors of the Prism held the directional positions while Reverend Zan Butterfly Deerwoman opened the portals for the guides, spirits, totems and ascended masters to join us from the unseen world to the seen world. The children of the Prism and the Peace Poles (Ian and his sister Mikayla, Jeremiah and his sister Akaysiiyah) lit the ceremonial candles honoring the directions and the ancestors.

The circle was aglow with song and dancing. Kimberly Braun sang two songs representing the setting of holy ground and of being One with all. Marguerite Barnett dressed in brilliant emerald green wings and face-paint, blessed us with a Dance to Mother Earth's Springtime. Then Shahabuddin David Less, spiritual leader of Rising Tide International, honored the ceremony and gathering with blessings for the season and then leading us in a breathing meditation for the rebirth of ourselves and the earth. Our written visions for peace were taken to the center of the circle where the children offered them into the fire.

The Crystal Opens in Half

We knew this would be not only a powerful ceremony but also that the energy would be very spiritual. In preparation for it, a special 9" quartz crystal was purchased so that it could be displayed on the altar with the Mandala. Representative of the original Prism of Light, it was placed at the base of the mandala throughout the ceremony. This crystal held and gathered the combined energies and blessings of all those in the circle. Thirty-six hours later, when picking up the quartz crystal from where it had been placed on our personal altar at home, it shifted very gently and separated into two identical pieces, looking like a pair of perfect book-ends. The two sides can be placed together revealing no separation, yet they can be pulled apart into two distinct pieces.

In the ceremony on Friday night, we shared that the Crystal of Peace was the next step in the unfolding of the Prism of Light. We shared that the Crystal of Peace was an "opening" for each of us to become crystals ourselves. We shared that on the Equinox the hours of daylight and darkness were in perfect balance and alignment. It's clear that the power and energetic blessings of that ceremony indeed opened the 9 inch quartz crystal as though in confirmation of what we had accomplished as a community on March 20th.

Deep Appreciation to All

For all those who made this ceremony sacred, none of this could have been accomplished without your help, either as participants or as attendees. Thank you to everyone who heard the call and participated - Madri Wilson for annointing us with Lotus Oil from Egypt and to those who helped her bless the four quadrants, Sherry Flanagan, Elizabeth Jacoby, and Linda Williams; to Joanne Driscoll and Pat Ready for smudging; to Linda Pupke for holding the heartbeat of the Mother Drum. To our gracious directional anchors, Rev. Jim Toole of Radiance of Sarasota, Rev. Eileen Kemp of the Wheel of Conscious Creation, Pam and David Cooper, Rev. Dusty James and Stan Welch; to our FireTenders - Lee D'Ovies and Lisa Nelson. And of course to the children, Ian and Mikayla Bowling and Jeremiah and Akaysiiyah Dunbar for anchoring the Peace Poles.

Deep appreciation to Kimberly Braun for singing, and Dr. Marguerite Barnett for dancing, and Rev. Zan Butterfly Deerwoman for opening and closing the ceremony. Special heartfelt gratitude to Shahabuddin David Less for your presence and for holding us sacred in beacons of love and respect. You gently inspire us to become more than we are.

And last but not least, we are grateful to Reverend Elizabeth Thompson and the members of Unity Church of Sarasota who continue to offer the labyrinth to our extended community for these ceremonies and celebrations. We are sincerely grateful.

The Crystal of Peace Mandala will be painted by this community at Wellness Fest on May 2 then made available to you for your spiritual gatherings. Please mark your calendars to attend Wellness Fest and bring your prayers for peace which will be painted into the mandala.
